Idle Spurs is an oasis of local custom, heartland hospitality and great country cooking. We're from New Jersey just outside of Manhattan and flew to Phoenix for a business conference. Took a day off to relax with a rented SUV fling through the desert (you know, Meteor Crater, Petrified Forrest, Painted Desert, Rainbow forrest, Montezuma's Castle, Sedona, all in one day, you get the idea). At night, on the long road back to Phoenix, we stopped in the very small desert town of Concho hoping to find some place still open and serving food. We stumbled upon the quaintest little bar/restaurant I've seen in many years of travel. When we first got there it was dark and empty except for the elderly owners. The wife was sitting at the empty bar playing the tabletop one-arm bandit. The hubby (about 80 y.o.) hobbled out to ask what kind of steak we wanted. We got the ribeye and New York steaks with baked potato and collard greens and the food was cooked to perfection. The medium rare steaks were the best we ever had. We asked the cook where he got the steaks and he said `Oh, I think we got those from Jimmy, or was it Andy?`. I guess it was a local cattle rancher! Soon after we arrived, about 20 people flooded in and filled the place. We were treated by a rare appearance of the legendary Johnny Williams who flew in from CA to visit family (who comprised most of the 20 guests!). He played three unplugged solo sets, and man, he gave Johnny Cash a run for the money. Beer was nice and cold, great hosts (make sure you repeat your order twice), terrific pool table...a REAL TINY place, but man what charm. Idle Spurs makes strangers in a strange land feel like part of the local inner family circle. Do not miss this opportunity to put a wonderful puncuate to your visit to warm folks in northern Arizona!
